Texas RioGrande Legal Aid awarded $1.8 million from Texas Access to Justice Foundation for legal aid for flood survivors

Funding will support legal aid for flood-related housing, benefits, insurance and recovery challenges

(AUSTIN, TX)  Texas Access to Justice Foundation, the largest state-based funding source for civil legal aid, today announced $1.8 million in funding for Texas RioGrande Legal Aid to provide legal services to Texans impacted by the recent Texas floods. The funding comes from the Texas Legislature and Stand with Santos, an initiative led by the State Bar of Texas President Santos Vargas to raise support for legal aid disaster relief from the legal community and the Fulbright & Jaworski Foundation.

“When Texans are recovering from a disaster, legal aid helps them protect their homes, families and livelihoods. Legal aid providers help survivors navigate legal matters and access the resources they need to rebuild their lives,” Deborah Hankinson, chair of the board of directors for the Texas Access to Justice Foundation, said. “With this support, Texas RioGrande Legal Aid is there at one of life’s most critical moments, delivering the legal help that allows people to recover and move forward.”

“In the aftermath of natural disasters, legal aid becomes essential to restoring stability and charting a path forward for Texans facing overwhelming challenges,” Texas Supreme Court Justice Brett Busby said. “This funding will ensure that more families have access to legal resources that protect their rights and support their recovery. Together, we can help ensure that all Texans have access and a fair opportunity to rebuild their lives.”

“So many people suffered devastating losses of life and property in the July Fourth Hill Country storms, and as lawyers we are committed to helping them the best way we can—by meeting their legal needs and supporting organizations that do the same,” State Bar of Texas President Santos Vargas said. “Through the Stand With Santos campaign, the State Bar is challenging all Texas lawyers to give money or pledge pro bono hours to support extending access to justice to more Texans, and we are proud to partner with the Texas Access to Justice Foundation in this effort.”
